Answering the Call: The Journey of discernment

Greetings, dear brothers and sisters,

Allow me to introduce myself. I am Angel Rey Selvido, a 21-year-old propaedeutic seminarian of the Missionaries of St. Charles—Scalabrinians. I come from San Roque parish in Mawab, Davao de Oro, which belongs to the Diocese of Tagum, Philippines. Guided by the motto ‘’Do not be afraid! Just have faith. Discern if you are being called,” I have embarked upon a profound journey of self-discovery and vocation discernment in the Scalabrini Formation Center where I have resided since September 1, 2023.

In my vocation journey, perseverance stands as the cornerstone. I acknowledge that achieving my life's goal is no easy feat, yet I draw strength from my unwavering faith in the Lord to overcome challenges in the Seminary. I believe that He guides me and grants me the strength to face difficulties as a seminarian.

My experience within the seminary has been a source of unbridled joy and enlightenment. In the Seminary, I have learned to value time and discern my calling to be a priest. Becoming a priest has been my dream since I was an altar server in my parish.

Yet, I realize that following this vocation is not easy, I have encountered many difficulties, especially in my studies, but I faced them in order to learn. Being a seminarian is not easy. Financial constraints, community life, and personal struggles have tested my resolve. tempting me to give up sometimes. However, being in the seminary is a blessing for me because I feel the love of my fellow brothers and formators. Their support helps me to persevere. Their advice, especially during tough times when I feel like giving up, keeps me going and helps me to discern wisely. I say to myself that I will survive with the help of the intercession of St. John Baptist Scalabrini.

Indeed, choosing this vocation is not simple because it demands perseverance, faithfulness and trust in God's will. Yet, with the grace of our Lord Jesus, the intercession of Mother Mary, and the help of St. John Baptist Scalabrini, I do not be afraid to follow his calling and submit my will to Him.

For all those who yearn to discern their vocation for religious life, I extend an invitation to open your hearts to the call of God. Answer Him with trust and love, for He will illuminate the path ahead. And to those who feel the call to love and serve the Lord as Scalabrinian missionaries for migrants, I would like to tell you that: "Do not be afraid, brothers! Just have faith. God is calling you. Come and be with us."
