Official statement from the Provincial Superior | The migrants were looking for a better life

The migrants were looking for a better life but died in a horrible tragedy.

On behalf of the Scalabrinian religious and priests of the Province of Santa Francesca Cabrini, we express our total solidarity with the families of the 39 migrants who died in a detention center of the National Institute of Migration in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, with the 29 migrants who were hospitalized and are in critical condition, as well as the thousands of migrants whose human rights are not respected in Mexico.

The Immigration Policy in Mexico leaves much to be desired in defense of dignity, the promotion of justice, and respect for the lives of the thousands of migrants who transit through Mexico to the United States in search of economic well-being, peace, and security for themselves, and their families.

We call for justice to be done for the victims of this tragedy and for their relatives to be helped by handing over the bodies of their dead and receiving financial aid, that the necessary measures be taken to prevent this sad and painful experience from repeating itself, and that the necessary changes are made so that the Mexican migration policy would be more humane and fair.

Sincerely yours in Migrant Christ,

Fr. Martin Ignacio Gutierrez, CS
